Tree surgery services in Preston and Lancashire

Six core services, plus clean-ups and advice. Every job is quoted free.

  • Tree surgeon taking down a tree in sections beside a house

Felling takes a tree down completely. In open ground it can be dropped in one piece, but in most Preston gardens it’s dismantled in sections from the top and lowered under control, keeping houses, fences and borders safe. Trees in private gardens don’t need a Forestry Commission felling licence, though protected trees and those in conservation areas need council approval first.

    When you might need it

    • A tree has outgrown its space
    • Roots or branches are causing problems near buildings
    • You want the light, or the garden, back
  • Climber working in the crown of a large tree

A crown reduction shortens branches around the outside of the crown, bringing a tree’s height and spread down while keeping its natural shape. Crown thinning leaves the size alone and removes selected inner branches, usually no more than 30% of the foliage, so light and air pass through. Good practice for both is set out in BS 3998, the British Standard for tree work.

    When you might need it

    • Branches reaching roofs, gutters or windows
    • A tree that’s too big for the garden but worth keeping
    • A garden left in shade by a dense canopy
  • Arborist pruning a mature oak beside a house

Pruning is selective work that keeps a tree healthy, safe and in proportion without changing its character. It covers removing dead, diseased and crossing branches, cutting back overhanging limbs, and crown lifting, which takes off lower branches to give clearance underneath. Light, regular pruning is usually kinder to a tree than heavy cutting every few years.

    When you might need it

    • Branches over paths, drives or a neighbour’s boundary
    • Deadwood that could come down in high winds
    • Low limbs blocking light, access or views
  • Tree stump and wood chippings on a Tree Musketeers job

A stump left behind after felling can stay for years, getting in the way of mowing, paving or replanting, and some species keep sending up new shoots. A stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump away below ground level, without the large hole left by digging it out. The remaining roots break down naturally, and the area can then be levelled, turfed or replanted.

    When you might need it

    • An old stump that’s a trip hazard
    • Clearing ground for a lawn, patio or new planting
    • A stump that keeps sprouting
  • Hedge trimming beside a driveway, with a ladder

Regular cutting keeps a hedge dense, tidy and at a height that suits you and your neighbours. We trim and reshape garden hedges and conifer screens, and reduce hedges that have got out of hand, taking care with conifers such as leylandii, which won’t regrow from bare brown wood. Heavier cutting is best planned outside the main bird nesting season, March to August.

    When you might need it

    • A hedge that’s grown too tall or too wide
    • Growth spilling onto paths, drives or the pavement
    • Regular cuts to keep a boundary neat
  • Fallen tree and cut branches on a lawn

Storms, decay and disease can leave a tree unstable or shedding limbs. If it’s a risk to people, property or a road, it can be made safe by removing the affected branches or taken down in controlled sections. Dead or dangerous trees are generally exempt from tree preservation consent, but it’s still sensible to tell the council first and keep photos of the problem.

    Warning signs

    • Cracks or splits in the trunk or main branches
    • Fungal brackets at the base, or a worsening lean
    • Storm damage, large deadwood or ash dieback
